The provincial government has announced the creation of the Ontario Music Fund, a $45-million grant program that would extend over three years starting in late 2013. But will Hamilton receive a piece of the pie?
Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Recreation, and Culture, Michael Chan, describes Hamilton as “a hub for many talented artists.”
“After talking to many people, I have discovered that there seems to be a movement to Hamilton. Maybe it’s for economic or environmental reasons, or the high real estate prices in Toronto. But nonetheless, there seems to be a …

[31 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Review – Batman: Arkham Origins | ]

Batman: Arkham Origins is the third game in the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, and while it fails to reach the heights of the first two games, it still holds its own.
The events of Arkham Origins precede the first two games in the series, taking place in the early stages of Batman’s detective career. One of Gotham City’s most notorious criminals, Black Mask, is on the loose and has sent eight assassins out to capture and kill the Dark Knight. The story isn’t exactly the same as the earlier games, …

[31 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Dining: Buffalo Wild Wings open in Ancaster | ]

For those who frequent The Meadowlands in Ancaster, the new restaurant that was being built over these past weeks may have been on your mind.
A new outlet of Buffalo Wild Wings, a popular American restaurant chain, opened to the public this past Monday.
The restaurant is known for its famous wings and sauces, but the most noticeable thing upon entering is the abundance of high definition TVs. There was no part of a wall that didn’t have a television in view, with a variety of sports to watch, or trivia quizzes …

[30 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Canada’s Psychotic Psychic on campus | ]

Psychic Dan Valkos set up a small booth outside the Arnie on Tuesday, and offered Mohawk students free psychic readings. Students were able to ask three questions about their futures that the psychic would then answer.
Valkos has made numerous appearances at Mohawk. MSA Special Events Organizer Baldeep Randhawa says he always loves bringing Canada’s Psychotic Psychic back for more.
“I think he’s great! He adds a bit of humour to the whole psychic thing so he’s not a very serious psychic like a lot of them out there so he fits …

[30 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Fashion Profile: Aaron Campanella | ]

Offensive. Dirty. Filthy.
Not words that usually come to mind when discussing fashion.
However, Mohawk Graphic Design student Aaron Campanella has incorporated these things into a budding skate-inspired fashion line, and has done it in a brilliant way.
Right now, Grime is a line of t-shirts and hats, as well as skateboards and skateboard accessories. However, Campanella is hoping to expand this line.
“Shirts, skateboards, pants, hats, underwear – I’m going to be doing quite a bit of stuff,” says Campanella. “I would love to venture off into blogging and, if Grime took off, …

[30 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on You’ve heard of toilet humour … | ]

Walking up the driveway to Hamilton musician Dave Gould’s home, a number of items act as clues to the man inside. There’s an old pickup truck, a colourful animated sign for one of his past shows, and a “Don’t Vote Harper” sticker on his screen door.
Dave Gould is a musician who specializes in instruments made from found objects.
“One of my most recent inventions is called the Antler Harp,” says Gould, gesturing to a half-rack of deer antlers. He has installed guitar strings across the antlers, turning them into an electric …

[26 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Review: Bad Grandpa | ]

When Borat came out in 2006, it was one of those shifts in comedy that often heralds a new age and style of humour. Many waited to see what would follow. Audiences got Brüno… and that was it.
The reason Sacha Baron Cohen’s brand of prank comedy didn’t take off was because it’s very hard to do well. What separated Cohen’s movies from the comedy of The Tom Green Show or Just for Laughs! Gags was his talent, his daring ability to goad unwitting people, and his sheer devotion to the …

[24 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on TV Recap: PLL | ]

The yearly Pretty Little Liars Halloween special is always one of the most highly anticipated episodes of the season, and that was more true than ever, for Season 4, Episode 13: “Grave New World,” that aired Tuesday night.
Did the episode live up to expectations? I think so, to a certain extent.
The first half of the episode was more atmospheric than plot-driven, with a whole lot of running around creepy Ravenswood, but not much else. However, after Hanna found herself separated from the other girls (Aria, Emily and Spencer) things started …
