[19 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Supercrawl 2013 involves the neighbourhood | ]

For its fifth incarnation, Supercrawl aimed to be the biggest and best arts and music festival southern Ontario has to offer. This year’s event welcomed over 100 000 people into the James Street North community over two days of street art, local vendors, art installations, food trucks, buskers, and musicians.
Bands like Passion Pit and Yo La Tengo drew a massive crowd by King William Street while METZ and Chelsea Light Moving played the stage at Colbourne and James. Just down the road, Christ’s Church Cathedral openly participates in James Street events …

[19 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Trixx: not for kids? | ]

Trixx (best known for his comedic antics on Much Music’s Video on Trial) pulled double duty Wednesday at Mohawk College’s Arnie pub. “I just hope these guys don’t get too mad that I’m going to be interrupting their study time!” said Trixx a few minutes before going onstage.
Crowds of students  swarmed into the pub, carrying food and books alike, knowing full well that they might not make it back to class. Trixx began by talking about past venues he has played, and criticising anyone who worked for Rogers. “Alright let’s …

[19 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Album review: Nothing Was the Same | ]

Lucky for us, one of the most anticipated albums of the year leaked this past Sunday.
Drake’s newest album Nothing Was The Same was set to be released on September 24th, but fans got a chance to listen right away.
The intense storytelling of Drake’s last album Take Care elevated his superstar status in the rap game. Once again, Drake brings that same intense vulnerability to his new album.
That said, it seems  Drake has really grown since the last album and his confidence throughout the 15-track album is undeniable.
“Tuscan Leather” sets the tone …

[18 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Concert Review: Down With Webster | ]

The sun set on Echo Beach in Toronto last Saturday, but the stage lights shone as the band Down With Webster took the stage. They opened the show with their hit song She’s Dope, sending a surge of  energy through the audience. There wasn’t a single person throughout the entire show who wasn’t singing and dancing along to the contagious music.
Coca Cola sponsored the free concert event as one last summer blow out. Concert-goers were able to get free gifts such as an airbrushed t-shirt, cans of soda and red glow sticks …

[18 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Supercrawl: Flux | ]

Hamilton has become so much more than a steel city. After a few years of having this event on James Street North, Super Crawl has become an established destination on the yearly arts calendar. Last year alone an estimated 70,000 people attended this event for the whole weekend. This festival displays a huge range of creative arts like music bands, dancing and art. It’s very big on showcasing local talents and artists who can just be students trying to start from scratch.
Three girls, Olivia Rozma, Jennifer Shamo and Alicia Giansante, …

[17 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Review: Dexter: Monkey in a box | ]

Goodbye Dr. Evelyn Vogel, wish I could say sorry to see you go, but when you try to reconcile with your son years after you locked him away for murdering your other son (and at least a dozen others) against any sort of sane judgment … you kind of deserve to get your throat cut. That was a bit harsh, but hey, it happened. As for this week’s episode it was a cat and mouse game between Saxon and Dexter and it wasn’t Dexter at its peak. At its best, …

[17 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on What I did at Supercrawl | ]

Abraham gets up close and personal with the crowd. (Photo: Noah Salo)
I thought about reviewing Supercrawl for one second. Then I realized that would be insane. How does one attempt to capture the feeling of two days worth of concerts, art displays, food trucks and vendors all held on a downtown street? It’s literally impossible for one person to experience everything there is to experience at Supercrawl, so I won’t offer a review. Instead I will tell you my story about what I did at Supercrawl, and you can tell …

[13 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Review: Insidious, Chapter 2 | ]

Horror sequels are rarely very good. Great horror movies are pretty rare to begin with, and when you consider how inferior sequels generally are to their originals, it’s remarkable when any horror sequel isn’t simply terrible. Insidious, Chapter 2 is one of the best of the last decade or so.
The first Insidious was the best horror movie of 2011. It was essentially just a haunted-house movie, but it was so good at earning legitimate scares, it rose high above its standard plot and borrowed ideas. The original movie ended with …

There has been chatter about Miley Cyrus and Kanye West making new music together.
Well folks, the rumors are true!

Just from the track’s title, fans could already tell how outrageous this song was going to be.  Now add the “twerk” queen herself to the mix and you know this song could quite possibly make history.
