[7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Much less music | ]

Ah, the teen years. Sleeping in on Saturdays was the best, right? And what did you do when you woke up early and couldn’t get back to sleep?
You watched MuchMusic, obviously.
The teenaged version of watching Saturday morning cartoons used to be flipping on MuchMusic and watching whatever music videos came on.
But now, if you turn on the newly-renamed MUCH, you won’t see much music at all.
For example: this Saturday’s schedule includes just TWO shows that play music videos, while the rest is syndicated ‘90s TV, movies and Video On Trial.
Where…

[7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Review: The Marshall Mathers LP 2 | ]

Eminem was in his mid 20s when he released his most iconic album The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000. His irreverent attitude and immense rapping talents combined to make him the most infamous musician on the planet at the time.
Now at age 4,1 he is revisiting some of the themes that made his 2000 landmark album. Em is aware at this stage of his career he’s sharing the spotlight with a number of younger artists but his irreverence and lyrical dexterity are as strong as ever. “I’m gonna take back what’s mine/ …

[7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Chester’s: more than just beer (but they have plenty of beer …) | ]

Take everything you think you know about beer and forget it. Michael Robins, the owner of Chester’s on King Street, knows ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING about beer.
Chester’s is known as Hamilton’s prime destination for tasting beers, with an extensive and detailed menu featuring not only domestic beers, but beers from countries like Australia, India, Lithuania, Denmark, and Iceland. As a casual beer drinker, this fascinated me, and so one evening after a stressful day at school, I decided to stop by and see what all the buzz surrounding Chester’s really was.
From the …

[5 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Twin Forks coming to town | ]

Chris Carrabba might be best known for his work with Dashboard Confessional, but he’s also proven himself through writing and playing country-tinged songs with his new band, Twin Forks.
“I wanted to write music like this, and I also wanted to play specifically with this group of friends,” said Carrabba in a phone interview. “They were all friends of mine that didn’t know each other and I thought that they would enjoy each other’s company and challenge each other musically.”
The band played its first music festival without a name, essentially for …

[5 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Review: Ender’s Game | ]

Ender’s Game shouldn’t work as a movie. The Orson Scott Card book has a repetitive plot with overly complicated character arcs. The space battle sequences are unfathomably mammoth. And it has an ending that overshadows the rest of the story. Yet somehow, Ender’s Game works as a movie in all the ways it struggled as a book.
In 2136, the International Fleet operates in space and trains young children to be warriors. Fifty years earlier, an alien species called Formics attacked the Earth but were fought off. The International Fleet is …

[1 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Michael Burgess at the MacIntyre | ]

From the moment Michael Burgess stepped out on stage at Mohawk’s MacIntyre Performing Arts Centre, the eyes of the audience were fixed on him. Many in the audience wondered why the popular singer would choose to conceal himself behind a ball cap and a pair of black sunglasses. It wasn’t until the spotlight adjusted on him that they could see half his face was disfigured.
As the show progressed and the sound of live music echoed through the auditorium, the audience noticed a dramatic irony in Burgess’s song choices.
One of his …

[31 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on IFOA: All eyes on Canadian writers | ]

It’s been a big year for Canadian literature, and a busy couple of months for Canadian writers. Popular Canadian author  Joseph Boyden has just released his highly anticipated novel, The Orenda. And in September, CBC once again started accepting submissions for its national writing contest, Canada Writes.
With plenty of eyes fixed on Canadian literature, Toronto has been hosting the International Festival of Authors. The event kicked off October 24 and will …

[31 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on It’s just a jump to the left… | ]

Students sprawled out on the couches and chairs of Social Inc. (G112) on Tuesday with ample amounts of candy in hand. Plates were filled with brownies, cookies, and skull shaped cake, filled with blood-coloured jam.
Social Inc. has extended its hours on Tuesdays until 8:00pm this month. This allows for the room’s weekly social night Too Much Fun Tuesdays. In the spirit of Halloween, October 29th was called Halloween Hangouts.
Peer Wellness Worker at Social Inc. Jacqueline de Schutter, who is largely in charge of the Too Much Fun Tuesdays, says that …

[31 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Hannah Georgas at the Casbah | ]

Whether she was hunched over her keyboard, stepping backwards with her guitar, or singing with a hand raised high, Vancouver singer/songwriter Hannah Georgas commanded the stage as she played the Casbah in downtown Hamilton on Wednesday night.
Georgas, fresh off a tour of Europe, played songs from her latest album, a self-titled effort released in 2012. She opened her set with “Elephant”, the opening track of the album, and quickly went into “Enemies” and “Robotic”.
“I feel this record is a slow burn; it’s a grower for people,” Georgas said in a …
