Over fifty local developers, marketing professionals, business executives, web designers, animators, and engineers met at Radius Café on James Street South this weekend to brainstorm with other inspired minds at the third annual “Start-Up Hamilton”.
Presented by Innovation Factory, KITESTRING, Software Hamilton, and Vana Workforce, 25 ideas were pitched and the top seven were chosen to turn their pitch into a viable business proposal.
The winner was Walkbug, a mobile app that allows a person unfamiliar with his or her current geographical location to create a personalized walking tour.

[29 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Nintendo: Still in the game | ]

Nintendo has dropped a bombshell, people! Wait, is doing exactly what they mused about doing a bombshell? Nintendo has announced that they will pass on doing the usual 90-minute show for investors and instead will focus on their gaming booths and smaller events. Minutes after that announcement, the Internet exploded in a lack of reading comprehension. Trust me, reports of the company’s death have been greatly exaggerated.
First of all E3 is about the investors, not the gamers. The big press show is just that, and since Nintendo has begun announcing …

[19 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Winter slows Rec Centre construction | ]

The foundation has been poured and walls are going up on Mohawk College’s new $35 million, state of the art Recreation Centre.
Construction on the Rec Centre began on June first of last year. The question is, will it be ready for students and staff by the beginning of the 2013 Fall semester?
“Currently, we’re running about three weeks behind schedule due to winter conditions, but we’re very confident we’re going to pick that up and be on schedule in the very near future, probably within the next four weeks,” said project …

[11 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Day Care Now | ]

I’m not the best crusader. Every cause I come across seems valid. But more often than not, I just don’t have the time to put much energy into them, and they fall by the wayside.
But there’s one cause I’m really serious about:
Mohawk College needs a childcare facility.
I know – don’t we already have one? Where are all of those little kids in F-wing coming from? The facility at the College, once a daycare centre, is now an Early Years facility, which means it doesn’t offer full-time child care: parents are …

[10 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Turning up the heat on deniers | ]

So far, April has been like an iced drink spilled in your lap. The winds carry reckless gobs of spit from a grey and malevolent sky. “Sprung” is hardly the word to describe this year’s Spring.
So when thermometers continue to dip below zero at night, it might not surprise you to hear an off-hand remark denouncing climate change. After all, last year’s near- 30-degree days in March were something of a freak occurrence. Weren’t they?
The casual dismissal of accepted climatology, even as a joke, is serious. Mark McCaffrey of the …

[9 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Which is cheaper: a ticket, or your life? | ]

If I put my foot on the brake right now, we would probably both be dead.
That’s a thought that I think crosses just about every driver’s mind at one point or another while being tailgated.  It crosses mine more than twice a day while I’m driving on the 403.  Just the other day, I was victim to the worst tailgating that I have ever experienced.
A bald-headed man in a shiny, silver Hyundai SUV came barreling up behind me as I merged into the passing lane to get around multiple large …

[5 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Roger Ebert: an appreciation | ]

I met Roger Ebert once. It was in the fall of 2008, on the heels of the release of his book Scorsese. I went to a book signing of his with a friend of mine, and after a long wait in line, I found myself face-to-face with the man who’d shaped my love of movies more than any other.
It was a bittersweet experience. Meeting your idol is a blessing not everyone receives and I was thrilled at the opportunity. At the same time, when I did finally get to approach …

[4 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Theo Fleury: Back from the brink | ]

“Eight years ago I had a fully loaded pistol in my mouth, ready to pull the trigger,” said former Calgary Flames great Theoren Fleury to a crowd of student-journalists at Mohawk College. ”Now here I am today, my life is manageable, because I can be honest.”
Speaking candidly, Fleury answered questions about his struggles with mental illness and sexual abuse.
“I think mental health is a by-product of trauma,” said Fleury. “I talk in my speeches all the time about my struggles with anxiety, panic, depression, anger problems, that were a by product of …

[4 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Staff, volunteers, seek to bust stress on campus | ]

Once the calendar switches over to April, tensions flare across Mohawk College. The end of the school year is approaching quickly, and many students find themselves overworked, scrambling to complete everything in time. These students certainly appear to be in need of some kind of release. This year, they may be in luck.
Mohawk staff and student volunteers have teamed up to establish the Stress Busters campaign. Stress Busters is a collection of various activities intended to take the pressure off students when they need relief most of all – the …
