Space, distancing and staffing challenges all together made a contribution to the decision not to resume full-time classroom instruction October 13, according to a letter of the Superintendent sent to families.

Some parents in Portland Public Schools said that they support the decision of Superintendent Xavier Botana to not bring elementary students back to in-person learning five days each week as the district had hoped it might be able to do by the middle of October.

Foreign students who are pursuing degrees in the US will need to leave the country or risk deportation if their universities transition to online-only learning, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The move might affect thousands of international students who come to the US to attend universities or take part in training programs, as well as vocational or non-academic studies.

Japan had opened up to foreign students since it sought to expand its skilled workforce in the situation of an aging society. According to the Japan Student Services Organization, the number of foreign students in the country reached above 310,000 in 2019, up from 164,000 in 2011, and exceeding a national government goal of attracting 300,000 by 2020.
