Upon graduating high school, Baker moved to Hamilton from her hometown of South Bend, Indiana to attend Mohawk College and play for the Mountaineers women’s volleyball team. Baker is currently enrolled in Mohawk’s Police Foundations program, and plans on pursuing a career in forensic psychology and eventually work in the FBI’s profiling department. [7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Much less music | ]

Ah, the teen years. Sleeping in on Saturdays was the best, right? And what did you do when you woke up early and couldn’t get back to sleep?
You watched MuchMusic, obviously.
The teenaged version of watching Saturday morning cartoons used to be flipping on MuchMusic and watching whatever music videos came on.
But now, if you turn on the newly-renamed MUCH, you won’t see much music at all.
For example: this Saturday’s schedule includes just TWO shows that play music videos, while the rest is syndicated ‘90s TV, movies and Video On Trial.
Where…

[7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Review: The Marshall Mathers LP 2 | ]

Eminem was in his mid 20s when he released his most iconic album The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000. His irreverent attitude and immense rapping talents combined to make him the most infamous musician on the planet at the time.
Now at age 4,1 he is revisiting some of the themes that made his 2000 landmark album. Em is aware at this stage of his career he’s sharing the spotlight with a number of younger artists but his irreverence and lyrical dexterity are as strong as ever. “I’m gonna take back what’s mine/ …

[7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Chester’s: more than just beer (but they have plenty of beer …) | ]

Take everything you think you know about beer and forget it. Michael Robins, the owner of Chester’s on King Street, knows ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING about beer.
Chester’s is known as Hamilton’s prime destination for tasting beers, with an extensive and detailed menu featuring not only domestic beers, but beers from countries like Australia, India, Lithuania, Denmark, and Iceland. As a casual beer drinker, this fascinated me, and so one evening after a stressful day at school, I decided to stop by and see what all the buzz surrounding Chester’s really was.
From the …

[7 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Bulldogs face goaltending controversy | ]

Ten games into the Bulldogs’ 2013-2014 season, it appears that there is a goaltender controversy brewing in Hamilton.
Despite a modest start to the season with an overall 5-2-0-3 record, head coach Sylvain Lefebvre’s decision-making has been questioned by fans, especially when it comes to which one of his goaltenders start.
This debate sparked over the summer, when the Montreal Canadiens‘ management rewarded both Robert Mayer and Dustin Tokarski with contract extensions.
The Canadiens signed Mayer first and also gave him a lengthier, two-year contract that will run through the 2014-2015 season. Meanwhile, Tokarski signed only a one-year …

[5 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Twin Forks coming to town | ]

Chris Carrabba might be best known for his work with Dashboard Confessional, but he’s also proven himself through writing and playing country-tinged songs with his new band, Twin Forks.
“I wanted to write music like this, and I also wanted to play specifically with this group of friends,” said Carrabba in a phone interview. “They were all friends of mine that didn’t know each other and I thought that they would enjoy each other’s company and challenge each other musically.”
The band played its first music festival without a name, essentially for …

[5 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Review: Ender’s Game | ]

Ender’s Game shouldn’t work as a movie. The Orson Scott Card book has a repetitive plot with overly complicated character arcs. The space battle sequences are unfathomably mammoth. And it has an ending that overshadows the rest of the story. Yet somehow, Ender’s Game works as a movie in all the ways it struggled as a book.
In 2136, the International Fleet operates in space and trains young children to be warriors. Fifty years earlier, an alien species called Formics attacked the Earth but were fought off. The International Fleet is …

[3 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Women beat Saints in volleyball | ]

It was a back and forth, up and down, battle between the Mohawk Mountaineers and St. Clair Saints at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre (DBARC) Saturday night as  the Mohawk women’s volleyball team was able to secure a 3-2 win.
After losing their first set 18-25, Mohawk battled back and dominated the second and third sets, winning them 25-11 and 25-19. Although the fourth set was a close duel, Mohawk found themselves trailing by a couple of points for most of the set, with St. Clair coming out on …
