When filmmaker Peter Jackson announced J.R.R. Tolkien’s slim novel The Hobbit would be three movies instead of two (or even one), even more eyebrows were raised than when it was announced Guillermo del Toro would take over as director.  Del Torro would ultimately have to bow out, but all three movies are getting made, and Jackson explains why on the discs of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition. Spectators filed into the bleachers and peered through the glass walls in the mezzanine above the court to take in a weekend full of hoops action.
The Mountaineers men’s basketball team played host for a doubleheader against the Cambrian Golden Shield.
Men’s head coach Brian Jonker had his team looking focused before tipoff.
“We’re going to do what we do best… share the ball,” said Jonker.

The Pan Am Games are not the only big-ticket sporting event coming to Hamilton. In 2015, Skate Canada will be coming to town. Hamilton will be the host city of the event and Skate Canada will be the host organization.
Julia Davis, Hamilton’s Planning, Sport Tourism and Group Sales Coordinator for Tourism says the idea to host the event has been in the works for some time .

The Mohawk Women’s Basketball team kept up their winning ways as they cruised to a 66-31 victory over the visiting Cambrian Golden Shield at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
“We need to capitalize on our plays and make our foul shots,” said Mohawk guard Carissa Browne before the game.
“I think that’s what did it for our last game. We had opportunities and moments when we could’ve taken advantage of the win but we didn’t because of lapses like that.”

The Hamilton Red Wings took to the ice Monday night to take on the Stouffville Spirit. The Spirit, coming off a 2-0 loss to Georgetown, came out strong and their intense offence kept most of the first period action in Hamilton’s end. Despite the pressure, both teams were unable to find their way onto the scoreboard after one.
Stouffville drew first blood in the second period, when Nick Thomakos jumped on a juicy rebound from Hamilton’s net minder Corey Foster.

With just his guitar and his captivating voice, all eyes were on Marcio Novelli at The Casbah on Monday night. Novelli has been nominated for two Hamilton Music Awards this year: Adult Alternative Recording of the Year, and Local Group of the Year by People’s Choice.

The first rule of sequels is to turn up everything from the action to the humour, and in this Thor: The Dark World succeeds exceptionally well. At least is if this movie is a sequel to Thor and not The Avengers, though even by the standards of the high- stakes ending of The Avengers, this movie came close to topping that by sheer scale of the calamity threatening the universe. a banjo in his hands and his foot tapping a steady beat, Harrison Kennedy played some blues tunes to kick off the ceremony announcing the annual Hamilton Music Awards.
A veritable who’s who of Hamilton’s music scene gathered in the McIntyre Theatre for the official launch on Wednesday. Kennedy is nominated for four awards and will receive a lifetime achievement award at this year’s HMAs.
Comedian Shelley Marshall will once again co-host the awards show with musicologist Alan Cross. Marshall says the city’s small town feel makes Hamilton special.
