Varsity update: Mountaineers heading to championships
The Mohawk Mountaineers stunned the top-seeded team in the province, sweeping the Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa 3-0, to earn a berth in the gold medal match of the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship at Sheridan College in Oakville Friday (Feb. 22).
Mohawk will face the Nipissing University Lakers of North Bay in the final Saturday at 5:00 pm. The Lakers beat the reigning national champion Humber Hawks, also 3-0, in their semi final.
Player of the match Mo Sulaiman recorded 13 kills to lead the Mohawk Mountaineers to a straight sets victory over the top rated Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa Friday (Feb. 22) and a berth in the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship gold medal match Saturday at Sherican College in Oakville. The scores were 25-20, 26-24, 25-19.
Philippe Yeldon had 10 kills, two service aces and one stuff block for Algonquin, which was 17-3 in the East Region in the regular season, while the Mountaineers were 9-9 in the West.
