Mohawk’s Men’s Varsity Volleyball team pose with silver medals

The Mohawk Mountaineers fell just short of another upset, losing a dramatic five set decision to the Nipissing Lakers of North Bay at the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship gold medal match at Sheridan College in Oakville Saturday (Feb. 23). The Mountaineers, who knocked off Redeemer and Algonquin en route to an appearance in the final match, went home with the silver medal, bowing 16-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 7-15.

Fifth-year player Mo Sulaiman again led Mohawk with 12 kills and two stuff blocks. Phil Youngblut had six kills and six blocks. Marcin Jedrzejewski contributed seven kills, one service ace and two blocks, Trevor McLaughlin recorded eight kills and one block and Eric Danecke had seven kills and two blocks.

For Nipissing, Adam LeBlanc made 14 kills and seven blocks, while Frankie Edgecombe had 16 kills and three aces.

McLaughlin was Mohawk’s Player of the Game and was named to the All-Star Team along with Sulaiman. David Klomps of the Redeemer Royals was also an All-Star.

While the Mountaineers take home the silver medal, Nipissing advances to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, which will be played at Niagara College, March 7-9
