Mohawk advances to finals

They were the top two teams in the West Division of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association. And tonight (Saturday March 2), at Seneca College, the Mohawk Mountaineers and the Sheridan Bruins will play for all the marbles. It’s the gold medal match of the 2013 Belair Direct OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
The Mountaineers are the defending champions. In fact they are the reigning Canadian title holders. But the Bruins will definitely think it’s their turn for all the glory. Sheridan finished first in the division in the regular season with a sparkling 18-2 record. Mohawk wound up 16-4. Two of their four losses were at the hands of Sheridan - 84-75 in Oakville, November 28 and 88-72 in Hamilton in the regular season finale, February 20.
The Bruins advanced to the championship game with a solid 77-61 win over Fanshawe. The Mountaineers were involved in a wild semi-final with the host Seneca Sting before prevailing 87-78. Mohawk led by 33 points (65-32) in the third quarter, but the Sting made an incredible comeback and trailed by only six points (84-78) late in the game. However, that was as close as they got.
“For 26 minutes we played as good as I’ve seen,” said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker. “Our defense was fantastic and led to great transition offense. The massive lead was a great cushion for the last 14 minutes. Bottom line, we accomplished our first goal which was to give ourselves one game to repeat as OCAA champions.”
“We are excited to play in what should be a fantastic final (between) two of the best teams in the country.”
