In just a few months, Canada is about to introduce Datemyschool.com, a site that originated in the U.S. that combines social networking and online dating.

Balazs Alexa co-founded the site after a past flame mentioned how hard it was to meet people from other departments, or programs. Combining both the public aspect of a dating site with features similar to social media sites like Facebook, Alexa says the privacy of Datemyschool.com is what sets it apart.

“You actually have privacy,” says Alexa. “Let’s say you go on Match.com, or you go on another dating site, they usually filter by zip codes, so you have a pretty good chance that you will see your mom at some point, or your dad. They don’t have any of these privacy options.”

After joining, users have the ability to make their profile private from certain departments so that those people cannot see their information. Unlike a general dating site, the sites privacy makes it a safer environment.

Though it seems like a good idea in theory, do students think it’s actually a good idea? “I don’t see why not, I mean, what’s one more website? Facebook has helped connect millions of people, this one can’t hurt either,” says one Carleton University student.

Datemyschool.com has connected millions of people from schools like Harvard, NYU, MIT, and more.

But what about students who are not looking for love? Is the site still useful? “It’s not only dating. Some people use it as a meeting site, a meeting and networking platform because it’s really good for Alumni or for students to find new people. You can look for friendship. It’s good for both,” says Alexa.

Datemyschool.com is still just an American networking platform. Alexa says they are waiting until they know how well it will be received before launching it here in Canada.

A Mohawk College student says, “I would definitely use it. It’s a good way to meet people, and I think that’s what we already do with Facebook but we use it more for friends. So this would be better if you’re looking for more than friends.”
