Mohawk College and Mc Master University students raced through the Hamilton downtown core on Friday afternoon to help promote the interactive MyHamilton app for tablets and smart phones.

The app was developed as a partnership between McMaster University, The City of Hamilton, Columbia International College, Mohawk College and Weever Apps. The platform is designed to help keep people in touch with the hidden gems of downtown Hamilton.

Richard Hampshire of Mohawk says the listings section of the MyHamilton app can help people find jobs in Hamilton, as well as helping local businesses.

“[They] can pay a certain amount of money and can have their job listing posted directly to the MyHamilton app,” he said.

Students involved in the race used the app to share their adventures throughout downtown Hamilton by tweeting “#MyHamilton”. Team Illumacnati member David Opare said the running was hard but the app did help.

“The app was easy to use and I would recommend it,” he said.

Employment Services Coordinator for McMaster’s Student Success Centre Gisela Oliveira says the event helped promote the app just as Mohawk and McMaster were hoping.

“We accomplished what we set out to do, which was teach the students about Hamilton and how friendly our population can be,” she said.

Oliveira’s colleague, Kathy Woo, says students who followed the race will want to use the same app the contestants used.

“I think students are more inclined to use the app now just because they got to see what Hamilton has to offer,” she said
