Dan Cameron is no longer the coach of the Hamilton Red Wings, according to a team source.

“Dan Cameron and the Hamilton Red Wings have come to a mutual agreement for Dan to no longer be a part of the hockey organization,” said Kyle Smith, commentator for the team on INDI 101.

Cameron’s name was removed from the team’s website Thursday morning.

“He was a great coach, I learned a lot from him. (I’ve) never had a coach that knew so much about the game. It’s hard to see him leave,” said Red Wings forward Troy Crema following Thursday’s practice.

The Red Wings struggled this year under Cameron, with a record of 5-30-1 in 36 games.

Scott Elliott will assume the head coaching role. He was the Wings’ head coach last season, but moved into an associate’s role in the off-season to accommodate the hiring of Cameron.

“Scott’s a great coach, too. He brings a lot of structure to the team which should be good for us moving forward,” said Hamilton forward Sam Berg.

An official statement from the team is expected soon.
