On Saturday, Mohawk College opened its doors to a younger clientele than usual – children lining up to meet Santa Claus. The smell of popcorn filled the air and high-pitched voices clamoured as the pint-sized holidayers scurried around.

Lenny Graf provided the musical entertainment, adapting popular songs into kid-friendly versions (his version of “I Shot the Sherriff,” adapted to “I Caught the Carrot” was a big crowd pleaser). Graf has been performing at these types of events for years and said he does it because he loves to see their faces.

“The best part is the smiles on the families. Moms and Dads. Kids. Babies. Especially when a baby smiles.”

The young attendees also had the option to make crafts, play in an inflatable obstacle course, and decorate cupcakes and ice cream sundaes. There was even a very popular caricature art booth.

The event, sponsored by the President’s office, has been a hit for years. Trish Loomis, Manager of Special Events at the College said the event’s format has changed, but that it’s still a great chance for staff to celebrate the holidays together.

“In this format we’ve been doing it for the last four years or so, but the event of the whole … staff Christmas party, it’s been around for years and years at Mohawk.”

Santa Claus himself was even on hand to give out candy and hear the kids’ Christmas lists. He said the most-requested items this season were cell phones and iPods. His favourite request, though, came from a little girl who asked him for a motorcycle.
