The holiday season is starting a bit early for some members of the Hamilton Red Wings.

This year’s team features a number of Jewish players, meaning along with their Christmas celebrations, the Wings will be celebrating Hanukkah as well.

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is observed this year from December 8 to 16.

Forward Oliver Hyman is one of the Jewish players, and says it brings a special dynamic to the team.

“It’s a great experience,” he said. “I’ve never played with so many Jewish guys before. It give you the best of both worlds—a little bit of Christmas and a little bit of Hanukkah, so all the guys get to enjoy it.”

Oliver’s brother, Spencer Hyman, is the Red Wings’ captain. He says it’s a matter of understanding the other culture.

“I don’t celebrate Christmas, but I understand it’s a great holiday for them. We don’t really teach them about Hanukkah, but if they have any questions, we’ll let them know.”

The team doesn’t do much in the way of team functions for the holidays, observing a simple Secret Santa gift exchange.

“We throw everyone’s name in a hat, and then you pick someone’s name out; whoever you get, you buy that guy a gift,” Spencer said.

Avery Allen, the Red Wings’ starting goalie, says no matter what holiday someone observes, they’re still a hockey player.

“It’s great having a diverse room, but it doesn’t really make a difference in hockey.”
