It’s time to get out your lightsabers and blow off the dust on your storm trooper outfit because Star Wars is coming back in a big way.

Star Wars is without a doubt one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. Starting in 1977, the franchise has inspired countless filmmakers and has left a long lasting mark on pop culture. But an announcement Tuesday took everyone by surprise: Disney purchased the entire LucasFilm Company for $4.05 billion. This has created a frenzy on social media sites like twitter as every nerd on the internet was eager to share their opinion on the acquisition.

“I think the Disney acquisition is actually a good thing for the fandom just look at how successful Disney has been with Marvel,” said Michael Dodd, the creator of the podcast network This Week in Geek. “Iron Man, Thor and most recently the Avengers under Joss Whedon, and with Episode Seven they’ve said they are taking an entirely new direction.”

Star Wars has been off the big screen for six years. But alongside the news of Disney’s newest acquisition, it was announced that a new Star Wars film was to be released in 2015. But it doesn’t look like the new film will continue the old series.

“I don’t believe they can as far as from what I’ve heard Fox still owns the originals. They haven’t been very clear as to how that’s all going to work out,” said Michael Mercy, the host of the television show Armchair Directors. “As far as I can tell now the originals are not part of the deal for Disney to distribute.”

The newest movies could take the Star Wars in new directions.

“They’re not going to be looking at Timothy Zahn books or Kevin J. Anderson’s new Jedi order,” said Dodd. “So I’m fairly confident that Disney’s new directions will breath some new life into the franchise.”

While some have responded in a positive manner other fans have lashed out against the announcement of the new films. Twitter is rife with snarky comments about Mickey Mouse being the villain in the next film, and other conventional jokes. Yet as Yoda says, “difficult to see the future is”- only time will tell if this will bring the series back to its glory days.
