Mohawk College was decked out and ready to celebrate Halloween Wednesday afternoon. Various spooky displays and contests took place, free of charge to help students get into the spirit and involved.

“Halloween is amazing, it’s one of my favourite holidays,” said Jen Savory a Mohawk student who wore whiteout eye contacts and an 1800’s style dress, covered in blood. “I like today more than Christmas, I wake up on Halloween morning and it’s Christmas morning for me.”

Mohawk’s Athletics department provided students with Halloween related activates to help them escape their studies for a day. Outside the gymnasium, students participated in a gingerbread-haunted house-building contest.

“This gives students a chance to relax and take a break by having fun with some other students,” said Matthew Schnarr, Mohawk’s Recreational Coordinator in the Athletics department.

Other departments among the college also celebrated Halloween with students. The Aboriginal Education staff members held an event called “Keep calm and kill a zombie.” Students were lined up inside the Aboriginal Centre to aim a Nurf gun at a row of zombie bobble heads.

“All students are welcome to have fun and shoot zombies,” said Amanda Collina, Aboriginal Education Service Promoter. “Today is like a community awareness event, we want students to check out our services and talk to the staff.”

Students were also swarming the Student Engagement office for the candy buffet. Anyone in costume could take a paper box and fill it with treats.

The active participation at Mohawk today is proof, no matter how old you are, Halloween is for everyone.
