Canadian Electro-pop group, Dragonette will be performing in the Arnie this Thursday, January 17^th.

The band gained public prominence in 2011, when they topped the charts with their single “Hello”, a poppy collaboration with Parisian DJ and music producer Martin Solveig. The incredibly danceable single isn’t on their newest album, Bodyparts, but instead appeared on Sloveig’s 2011 album, Smash.

Dragonette formed in Toronto in 2005 and with the exception of guitarist Will Stapleton, the rest of the members are homebred Torontonians. Stapleton, from London, England, replaced the band’s previous lead guitarist, Simon Craig, back in 2007.

The band, originally called The Fuzz, got their first gig touring the US as an opening act for Duran Duran. Once they were signed to Mercury Records the band relocated to London, recording their first studio album, Galore.

“This is pop at its glossiest, its best and without doubt its groin-itchingly sexiest,” said Talia Kraines in her 2007 BBC review of the album.

“Competition”, one of the singles from this first album, has lead singer Martina Sorbara bragging about stealing someone’s boyfriend. The song and the corresponding video feel very much Cyndi Lauper-inspired.

The single has a flashy, 80’s inspired video.

Fast forward to September 22, 2012, when the band released their third studio album, Bodyparts. The band gained increased mainstream influence reaching number 17 on US dance charts with this album, up from spot 21 with their 2009 album, Fixin to Thrill.

For those who enjoy a fun 80’s inspired ballad with attitude, the single “Live In This City” is the track you probably won’t regret checking out (dancing is optional, but for some, inevitable).

Even more retro-inspired tracks on this album, Dragonette gives you “Untouchable,” the track that Sorbara chants about the unfavourable affect a man has on her (think a little of Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much” attitude with a little of No Doubt’s “Hey Baby” sound).

The band promises to be a put on a pretty fun show, check it out tomorrow at the Arnie, tickets are $15 at the Campus Den, and $20 at the door.
