Now that October is here that means Halloween is just around the corner! This means over the next couple weeks those who celebrate Halloween will be busy decorating their homes, carving pumpkins and, of course, prepping their Halloween costumes. The question is, should you spend the money and purchase a costume, or should you create your costume yourself?

Some people choose to make their own costumes because it gives them an opportunity to be creative. Terri-lynn MacMillan likes to create her own costume to be different.

“I like taking different types of costumes and putting them together in my own creative way to be original,” MacMillen said.

Creating your own costume can also help you save a few dollars. Mohawk grad Scott McGarry chose to create his costume this year. He was planning on dressing up as the Mortal Kombat character Sub Zero, but the store-bought version of this costume costs 80 dollars. So McGarry decided to create his own costume.

After buying fabric from Lens Mills , small accessories from Wal-Mart and using some things he already had laying around his house, the home made costume only cost McGarry approximately 45 dollars, about half the price he would have paid in a store.

But not everyone has the creative touch or the time, so they have to buy their Halloween costumes.

“It’s easy, it’s convenient, and I don’t have to make it myself,” said Ruth MacKeigan.

Store-bought Halloween costumes are great if you are looking for a costume that can look as accurate as it as can be. The biggest con when it comes to buying Halloween costumes would be that they are expensive, and chances are you are only going to wear them once.

In the end, there is no right or wrong way to go about creating your costume for Halloween. It all depends on your situation money-wise, time-wise and creative-wise. As long as you are dressed up in an awesome costume for October 31st, that’s all that matters.
