It was a back and forth, up and down, battle between the Mohawk Mountaineers and St. Clair Saints at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre (DBARC) Saturday night as  the Mohawk women’s volleyball team was able to secure a 3-2 win.
After losing their first set 18-25, Mohawk battled back and dominated the second and third sets, winning them 25-11 and 25-19. Although the fourth set was a close duel, Mohawk found themselves trailing by a couple of points for most of the set, with St. Clair coming out on …

[1 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Red Wings hitting their stride | ]

Any hockey club faced with their captain being injured and not in the lineup for an elongated period, coupled with the loss of their top scorer would be struggling. But the Hamilton Red Wings, only needed time to acclimate their game through a surprising depth of scoring that has miraculously materialized.
The Corey Caruso, Connor Bramwell and Mitch Reid line has been on fire to say the least. 33 points for the trio in the last seven games and the three aren’t even playing their best hockey yet.
That’s not to say …

[20 Mar 2013 | Comments Off on Mohawk wins national basketball championship | ]

There is a fine line between confidence and cocky and Mohawk was forced to walk it entering the 2012 Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball National Championships.
Riding high off their win of the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association (OCAA) gold medal (March 3), the Mountaineers descended into Halifax en route to the host school, Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, Nova Scotia.
“We were pretty excited about, I mean, even winning OCAA’s,” said Mohawk’s power forward, Andrew Cicuttini. “Obviously, we couldn’t have been happier about beating off Humber twice in a …

[6 Nov 2011 | Comments Off on Mohawk wins home-opener; starts 2-0 | ]

Starting point guards are usually taught to go into a game with a pass first shoot second mentality. Meant to be the facilitators for their team, point guards are left to curb their desire to score, and rather setup teammates to take care of the points.
The situation for Mohawk is a little different, however. Starting point guard for the Mountaineers, Rachelle Abella, is forced to start each game with a different mindset than most typical point guards.
“I have a role on the team,” said Abella. “I’m a captain so I …

[6 Nov 2011 | Comments Off on Mohawk wins big in home opener | ]

Defence leading to offence allowed the Mountaineers to pull away from the overmatched and undersized St. Clair Saints in Mohawk’s 98-66 home opening win on Nov. 4.
“Basically, we just had to work on rebounding, take of defence, and let the offence take care of itself,” said starting point guard Manny Campbell.
Mohawk played an up tempo game that wore down the Saints, and allowed plenty of easy baskets in the second half. Aminu Bello reaped the benefits of several layups off fast-break passes, mostly by Campbell, that helped him reach a …

[8 Oct 2011 | Comments Off on New OCAA veteran could mean big things for men’s basketball | ]

During the men’s exhibition basketball game against George Brown, it didn’t take long to realize that Mohawk will have a dangerous backcourt to contend with this season.
Once Aminu Bello returns from injury, he will join fellow First Team All-Star Manny Campbell—which will undoubtedly make one of the best one-two guard combinations in the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association.  Campbell is a rookie with the Mountaineers this season, but has three years of OCAA experience coming over from Fanshawe.
“He’s kind of a pass-first point guard with a very big burst,” said head …

[8 Oct 2011 | Comments Off on Women’s basketball team welcomes new frontcourt | ]

Eight players have moved on from last year’s women’s varsity basketball team, six of them post players. To have any success this season, head coach Kevin Duffy will have to get big contributions from Cynthia Mosca and Megan Campbell.
“If we can get some easy baskets, than definitely we’re going to take it,” said Duffy.
The backcourt remains virtually the same and starting point guard Rachelle Abella and the other guards will need some time to work as a unit with the new additions.
“It’s just a matter of coming together, our timing …
