[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Funny money on campus | ]

A comedian delivered the message, but it was no laughing matter. Comedian James Cunningham spoke to students during the Funny Money presentation as part of Financial Literacy Month at Mohawk College.
“You are my people. You are broke-ass college students.”
The remark provoked a wave of laughter among the students who had come to hear Cunningham in the Arnie last Wednesday. Students sat attentively, waiting for Cunningham’s punchline, but it wasn’t all laughs. He offered some very good tips to help students learn how to manage their finances.
For example, Cunningham told the …

Hey, you! Yes, you. I’m on to you– I know where you surreptitiously disappear to when you think nobody’s looking. What’s the big deal, anyway?  Everybody does it. Going to the bathroom is a universal thing.
Well, that’s where you’re wrong. Using the accessible washrooms (the huge ones featuring wheelchair signs, support bars, and other equipment) when you don’t need them is ignorant.
Mohawk College has over forty washrooms on campus. Jennifer Jahnke, the college’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act project coordinator, says she doesn’t know the exact number of accessible washrooms …

[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Bad hair days? Or bad attitudes? | ]

If anyone knows who I am, they will know right away that I love hair. I love to style my hair in any way possible. Name almost any style and I have probably rocked it over the years. I love the fact that I can wear my hair in any form. With that being said, I think that sometimes it’s hard to believe that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
I read a recent article called Another Day, Another Natural Hair Ban: Vanessa VanDyke Asked To Cut Her …

Gillian Nicola is quickly establishing herself as one of the best voices in Hamilton. Her debut EP, Chasing the Wind by Gillian Nicola and the Radio Interference, has her up for two Hamilton Music Awards, one for Alt/Country Recording of the Year and one for New Group/Artist of the Year.
“It’s very exciting,” Nicola said. “It’s really an honour. I didn’t think we’d actually get nominated, but you know, it’s really, really nice.”
Nicola started singing in her youth as a member of the Hamilton Children’s Choir, and continued her passion for …

[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Tokarski taking game to next level for Bulldogs | ]

Just a week ago, the Hamilton Bulldogs were coming off their worst slump of the season, losing six consecutive games and the team in desperate need of a spark.
With Hamilton winning four of the last five games and outscoring opponents 18-10 over that stretch, it appears the Dogs have indeed found that spark.
A major reason for Hamilton’s recent success is Dustin Tokarski, who’s outstanding play last week earned him AHL Player of the Week honours after going 3-0-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average and a .980 save percentage.
Despite a tough 6-3 …

[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Is the DBARC making a difference on campus? | ]

Attending varsity games can be a big part of getting the “college experience” and can also help amp up school spirit.
With the construction of the new David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre (DBARC), more students are attending varsity games according to Michelle Ball, the Director of Student Engagement and Athletics. Ball says that although they don’t keep attendance records for varsity games there has been a noticeable increase compared to last year, when the teams were still playing in the old gym.
The Mohawk athletic department is doing a number of …

[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Dining in the Dark: The Experience | ]

Darkness. Black. That is all you see. You can smell delicious food around you. You can hear the clinging and clanging of plates as wait staff bring you your food, but you can’t actually see it. This is what many people experienced at the Sense it: Dining in the Dark event last Wednesday at Stonewalls Pub in Hamilton.
The event was organized by a volunteer organization in Hamilton called Sense 4 Change and all the proceeds from the event went to the CNIB. The event itself was actually a test run …

[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Black Friday: your survival guide | ]

It’s almost that time again, shoppers! It’s the busiest shopping day of the year. Time to hustle our way through large crowds of screaming people and get those deals we’ve been waiting for.
Black Friday traditionally kicks of the shopping season and it’s also a great way for students to score some cheap gifts for Christmas.
Finally, Canadians can get a true taste of the Black Friday experience without having to travel to the U.S., since this shopping tradition has moved across the border this year.
Michelle Plant is a mother of two …

[28 Nov 2013 | Comments Off on Artist profile: Danielle Beaudin | ]

“I started playing piano when I was eight years old, and after that just sort of picked up more and more instruments. I learned guitar, then started learning the clarinet in school,” says 23-year-old local singer/songwriter, Danielle Beaudin.
The former Mohawk student was inspired by the creative minds of Joni Mitchell and The Beatles as she developed her own way of writing and singing. Beaudin released her first album in October. “I was a co-op student at a recording studio, and in my spare time when I wasn’t working I would …
