[10 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Local musician releases first CD | ]

Ever since Danielle Beaudin was a little girl, music has been a big part of her life. When she was a young kid, she rallied together some neighbourhood friends to start a band with her.
“We would put on concerts in the backyard and make all of our parents come and watch, and dress up like the Spice Girls or something. Thought we were pretty cool doing that, but it was fun,” Beaudin recalled, laughing.
Now, Beaudin has gone from performing in her backyard to releasing her first CD, Wait for your …

[10 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Is Hamilton still a Steel City? | ]

Hamilton’s history as Canada’s “Steel Town” is becoming a distant memory – and nowhere is that clearer than at the new Tim Hortons Field.

So now what? I’ve admitted the problem, and according to the 12 Step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous, I now need to accept that there is a higher power who can help me: Oprah.
An article in O Magazine by author Maeve Binchy talks about “acts of friendship”: those things that you do to bring happiness to others. I make a conscious effort to do nice things: I bake cupcakes for my classmates, have friends over for dinner and whenever I …

[10 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on “Priority Seating”? Hardly | ]

In the McIntyre Theatre, there’s a small nook filled with hard plastic chairs. It would be understandable if you missed it, especially in the dark. The only thing distinguishing it from a storage space is a dark blue sign posted up reading: “Priority seating for the disabled.”
Sitting there is not a choice. If you have any kind of mobility device more intrusive than a cane, sitting there is a must. Not a big deal, right? It says “priority seating”, so it must be decent.
Not so much. Once the lights are …
