[4 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Theo Fleury: Back from the brink | ]

“Eight years ago I had a fully loaded pistol in my mouth, ready to pull the trigger,” said former Calgary Flames great Theoren Fleury to a crowd of student-journalists at Mohawk College. ”Now here I am today, my life is manageable, because I can be honest.”
Speaking candidly, Fleury answered questions about his struggles with mental illness and sexual abuse.
“I think mental health is a by-product of trauma,” said Fleury. “I talk in my speeches all the time about my struggles with anxiety, panic, depression, anger problems, that were a by product of …

[28 Mar 2013 | Comments Off on Helping Hamilton’s transgender community | ]

When the topic of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) issues arises, many tend to discuss the topic of same-sex marriage, or the many suicides that have occurred in the past couple of years. As pressing and important as those issues are, an on-campus event is pressing students to think about other, less-obvious issues.
Every common hour until April 3rd, Social Service Worker students at Mohawk are holding a donation drive in the C-Wing as part of a community change project. They are looking for cash donations in order to …

[26 Mar 2013 | Comments Off on Rodeo comes to town | ]

It was bulls, broncs, and barrels at the Ancaster Fairgrounds this weekend as the Ontario Finals Rodeo rode into town.

Bull riding was the most popular event, with people standing on the bleachers to get a good look at the brave riders who attempted to hold on for the eight seconds they had to last to qualify for a score.
“It’s really hard to explain what it’s like to …
