[30 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Fashion Profile: Aaron Campanella | ]

Offensive. Dirty. Filthy.
Not words that usually come to mind when discussing fashion.
However, Mohawk Graphic Design student Aaron Campanella has incorporated these things into a budding skate-inspired fashion line, and has done it in a brilliant way.
Right now, Grime is a line of t-shirts and hats, as well as skateboards and skateboard accessories. However, Campanella is hoping to expand this line.
“Shirts, skateboards, pants, hats, underwear – I’m going to be doing quite a bit of stuff,” says Campanella. “I would love to venture off into blogging and, if Grime took off, …

Walking up the driveway to Hamilton musician Dave Gould’s home, a number of items act as clues to the man inside. There’s an old pickup truck, a colourful animated sign for one of his past shows, and a “Don’t Vote Harper” sticker on his screen door.
Dave Gould is a musician who specializes in instruments made from found objects.
“One of my most recent inventions is called the Antler Harp,” says Gould, gesturing to a half-rack of deer antlers. He has installed guitar strings across the antlers, turning them into an electric …

When Borat came out in 2006, it was one of those shifts in comedy that often heralds a new age and style of humour. Many waited to see what would follow. Audiences got Brüno… and that was it.
The reason Sacha Baron Cohen’s brand of prank comedy didn’t take off was because it’s very hard to do well. What separated Cohen’s movies from the comedy of The Tom Green Show or Just for Laughs! Gags was his talent, his daring ability to goad unwitting people, and his sheer devotion to the …

[24 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Mohawk enters the Dragons’ Den | ]

If you only took one thing away from Bruce Croxon’s speech last night at the McIntyre Theatre, it should have been this: Kevin O’Leary is not as big a jerk as he seems on TV.
Dragons’ Den member and Lavalife co-creator Bruce Croxon spoke at the year’s first Mohawk Talks, a series supported by the college and community, which brings influential speakers to Hamilton. A rapt audience of fans and entrepreneurs gathered in the theatre, trying to get as close to Croxon as possible.
He started out the night by briefly going …

[24 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Changing attitudes to mental health | ]

In her 30-plus years as a psychiatric nurse, Michele Luckett has seen thousands of young people struggling with the stresses and pressures of growing up.
She says digital technology has exacerbated those pressures, while at the same time making it more difficult for some teens to cope.
One girl in her early teens, Luckett remembers, always felt like an outsider at school but found comfort online. But then some of the people online started calling her names, telling her she was no good and unloved, and even suggesting she kill herself. Her previous …

[24 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on TV Recap: PLL | ]

The yearly Pretty Little Liars Halloween special is always one of the most highly anticipated episodes of the season, and that was more true than ever, for Season 4, Episode 13: “Grave New World,” that aired Tuesday night.
Did the episode live up to expectations? I think so, to a certain extent.
The first half of the episode was more atmospheric than plot-driven, with a whole lot of running around creepy Ravenswood, but not much else. However, after Hanna found herself separated from the other girls (Aria, Emily and Spencer) things started …

The Hi-Rise Group unveiled its plans for new condo units to be built immediately north of the Lister Block.
At a Renew Hamilton event on October 18, the development group announced the empty lot that currently occupies the space will be replaced with a mixed-use building.  The ground floor will be retail, with three additional floors of offices and 100 residential units.
The space was formerly the four-storey William Thomas building, built in 1855 and taken down in 2010 as part of the renewal of the Lister Block.

[18 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Open-mic: short on attendance, long on talent | ]

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Trish Robb kicked off the jam session with a handful of original songs before stepping back to act as judge and the evening’s host.
Students from Mohawk’s music program, as well as a handful of other programs, came out to show off their original compositions and musical talent, despite many finding out about the event on short notice. Music student Heather Scott, who followed up Robb’s performance with a cover of Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee”, said she learned about open-mic night the day before. Nick Rendeiro, another …
